The Sustainability of Colonial Spatial Heritage in Bandung City: A Review through Henri Lefebvre's Theory of The Production of Space

Abstract. Bandung is one of the most significant colonial cities in the Dutch East Indies, now transformed into a Center of National Strategic Area (KSN), yet the rapid pace of modern development risks obscuring the colonial spatial traces that constitute the city's historical identity. This concern aligns directly with the global SDGs agenda, particularly target 11.4, which emphasizes strengthened efforts to protect the world's cultural and natural heritage, making this study urgent before such traces are further eroded by modernization. This research aims to identify the Triad Space (spatial practice, representation of space, and representational space) that shapes Bandung as a Center of KSN based on elements of Dutch colonial space. The method employed is descriptive analysis through a space-reproduction approach grounded in Henri Lefebvre's principal theory of The Production of Space, examining spatial artifacts, colonial planning documents, and contemporary spatial practices. The findings show that elements of colonial spatial structure remain patterned within Bandung's modern spatial organization, forming a dynamic spatial continuity between historical value and national strategic needs. These findings offer a tangible contribution as a policy basis for cultural heritage area preservation within Bandung City's Regional Spatial Plan (RTRW), while also supporting the achievement of SDG target 11.4 through the integration of historical value into sustainable urban planning.
