Evaluation of Compliance with Aseptic Dispensing for Cytotoxic Drug Preparations at Santosa Hospital Bandung Central

Abstract

One method of cancer treatment involves chemotherapy using cytostatic drugs. To prevent potential exposure to cytostatic drugs, their handling must be carried out using aseptic dispensing techniques by competent and trained pharmacy staff, with the aim of ensuring staff safety, minimizing risks to the environment, and guaranteeing the quality and safety of the drug preparations. This study was conducted to assess the compliance with aseptic dispensing for cytostatic preparations at Santosa Hospital Bandung Central based on the Basic Guidelines for Dispensing Sterile Preparations and the Guidelines for Mixing Injectable Medications and Handling Cytostatic Preparations from 2009. The study design used was a prospective observational study conducted during the observation period of April 2026, a total of 322 cytostatic preparation samples prepared by trained pharmacy personnel were directly observed using a quantitative descriptive approach with a checklist based on the Basic Guidelines for Dispensing Sterile Preparations and the Guidelines for Mixing Injectable Drugs and Handling Cytostatic Preparations from 2009. The results of the study, based on 322 samples show that the  compliance in the early stages included handwashing at 100%, the use of personal protective equipment  83% with a non compliance rate of 17%, and the use of a passbox at 75% with a non  compliance rate of 25%. Compliance during the compounding stage was 100%. Final-stage  compliance includes personal protective equipment  removal is 100% and the compliance rate for waste management procedures is 80%, with a non compliance rate of 20%.
