Patterns of Prophylactic Antibiotic Use in Cesarean Section Patients at Hospital X in 2025

Abstract. Cesarean section surgery carries a risk of postoperative infection. The use of prophylactic antibiotics is one way to prevent postoperative infection. Appropriate antibiotic use must be implemented to prevent the risk of bacterial resistance. This study aims to determine the patterns and profile of antibiotic use in cesarean section patients at a hospital X. This study used a retrospective descriptive observational method based on patient medical records. The results showed that out of 152 antibiotic prescriptions, cefazolin was the most commonly used antibiotic at 95%. The pattern of antibiotic use was dominated by the administration of cefazolin before and after surgery, accounting for 58%. All antibiotics were administered intravenously in vial form with doses adjusted according to the patients’ clinical conditions. Based on the study results, cefazolin is the most commonly used prophylactic antibiotic in patients undergoing cesarean section.
