Two-Group Configural Frequency Analysis of Village Resilience Patterns Based on the 2024 Village Development Index

Abstract

Abstract. The Village Development Index (Indeks Desa Membangun / IDM) is an instrument used to measure the level of village development based on three main dimensions: the Social Resilience Index (IKS), Economic Resilience Index (IKE), and Environmental Resilience Index (IKL). This study aims to identify combination patterns of village resilience categories that appear significantly at the national level and to analyze the differences in these configuration patterns between Java and Outside Java using Two-Group Configural Frequency Analysis (CFA). The data utilized in this study consist of secondary IDM data from 2024, encompassing 75,261 villages across Indonesia. The IKS, IKE, and IKL variables were categorized into three resilience levels Low, Moderate, and High forming 27 category configurations (3x3x3). The analysis began with a Chi-square test to identify relationships among variables, followed by Configural Frequency Analysis (CFA) using a main-effects log-linear model. Significance testing for configurations was conducted using the Z-statistic with Bonferroni correction to control for Type I error resulting from multiple testing. The results reveal that at the national level, there are 8 Type configurations, dominated by villages with uniform resilience across all dimensions (either Low or High), and 18 Antitype configurations, which generally consist of combinations of Moderate categories or transition patterns between resilience levels. The Two-Group CFA results indicate distinct configuration patterns of village resilience between Java and Outside Java. Villages in Java tend to exhibit more balanced resilience patterns, whereas those Outside Java demonstrate greater heterogeneity, dominated by extreme configurations. Furthermore, the national-level CFA results are more representative of the conditions of villages Outside Java. These findings suggest that village resilience characteristics vary across regions, thus the formulation of village development policies must take into account region-specific characteristics.
