Abstract. Historical manhwa is a form of visual communication that functions not only as entertainment but also as a medium for conveying social messages, including the representation of women and feminism. One of the historical manhwa that addresses this issue is I Shall Master This Family by Kim Roah. This study aims to identify the denotative, connotative, and mythological meanings contained in panels representing feminism and to examine the representation of women from a feminist perspective in the historical manhwa I Shall Master This Family. This study employed a qualitative approach using Roland Barthes’ semiotic analysis. Data were collected through observation, documentation, and literature review. The findings indicate that feminism is represented through visual elements, including characters facial expressions, gestures, panel composition, and dialogues depicting women confronting a patriarchal system. The analysis identifies three main forms of representation: women’s leadership, stereotypes and social restrictions imposed on women, and women’s equality and resistance against patriarchy. Through its female characters, the manhwa represents women as individuals with equal competence, rights, and opportunities as men in various aspects of life. Therefore, I Shall Master This Family portrays feminism as an effort to reject gender discrimination and represent gender equality to critically understand women’s roles beyond patriarchal stereotypes.
