Abstract

Abstract. This study examines how non Muslim students at Universitas Islam Bandung (Unisba) perceive the implementation of religious tolerance on an Islamicbased campus. A qualitative descriptive method was used, with data gathered through indepth interviews with four purposivelyselected non Muslim students, complemented by observation and documentation. Findings show that daily social interaction between non Muslim and Muslim students, as well as with university leadership, is generally open and inclusive, although sporadic SARA related jokes and occasional unsympathetic reprimands from security or administrative staff still occur. Analyzed through Jalaludin Rakhmat's perception theory, students' perception is shaped more by personal background and social capital than by the campus environment itself. Using Umar Hasyim's six indicators of religious tolerance, Unisba's practice is best categorized as formalstructural tolerance: strong at the policy and leadership level, particularly on the indicators of peaceful coexistence and mutual help, but still asymmetrical on mutual understanding and respect for belief, especially regarding the mandatory Pesantren Mahasiswa program that lacks an alternative curriculum for non Muslim students.
