Abstract. Phubbing, the tendency to ignore a conversation partner in favor of a smartphone during face-to-face interaction, has become increasingly common among university students. This article presents a literature review examining how social anxiety and socio-emotional e-competencies relate to phubbing behavior. A narrative review method was used, synthesizing theoretical and empirical articles published between 2015 and 2026 obtained from Google Scholar, ScienceDirect, and Scopus using the keywords “phubbing,” “social anxiety,” and “socio-emotional e-competencies.” The reviewed studies are summarized in a synthesis table and further discussed descriptively. The review indicates that social anxiety consistently emerges across studies as a psychological predictor of phubbing, as individuals with high social anxiety tend to avoid direct interaction and turn to their smartphone as a coping mechanism. In contrast, the literature on socio-emotional e-competencies shows a more context-dependent pattern, with its predictive strength depending on how strongly phubbing has been normalized within a given digital social environment. This review highlights a gap in the literature regarding studies that integrate both variables simultaneously, particularly within the Indonesian student population.
