Abstract

Abstract.  Students experiencing academic stress are vulnerable to mental health problems; however, professional help-seeking remains relatively low. Public stigma and mental health literacy are considered important factors influencing help-seeking behavior. This study aimed to examine the effect of public stigma and mental health literacy on help-seeking behavior among undergraduate students experiencing academic stress. A quantitative study with a causal design was conducted involving 405 undergraduate students aged 18–25 years from public and private universities in Bandung selected using convenience sampling. Data were collected using the Stigma Scale for Receiving Psychological Help (SSRPH), Mental Health Literacy Scale (MHLS), and Actual Help-Seeking Questionnaire (AHSQ). Data were analyzed using multiple linear regression. The findings indicated that public stigma had a significant negative effect on help-seeking behavior, whereas mental health literacy had a significant positive effect. Simultaneously, both variables significantly predicted help-seeking behavior, with mental health literacy emerging as the stronger predictor. These findings suggest that improving mental health literacy while reducing public stigma may enhance students’ willingness to seek psychological help and support the development of mental health promotion programs in higher education.
