Abstract

Abstract. Advances in digital technology have transformed family interaction patterns, including the increased use of smartphones by parents when interacting face-to-face with their children. This has given rise to the phenomenon of parental phubbing, in which parents focus more on their digital devices than on direct interaction with their children. This article aims to examine the impact of parental phubbing on adolescents using a literature review method. The literature search was conducted through Google Scholar, PubMed, and ScienceDirect using the keywords Psychological Impact, Parental Phubbing, and Adolescents. The review found that parental phubbing reduces the quality of parent-child relationships, communication, and emotional warmth, while increasing adolescents’ perception that they are being neglected. This phenomenon is also associated with various psychological problems, including low self-esteem, anxiety, depression, loneliness, problematic internet use, and behavioral issues. However, open communication, perceived family support, and warm, high-quality family relationships can serve as protective factors that mitigate these negative effects. Therefore, parents should use digital devices more wisely while maintaining meaningful interactions and emotional engagement with adolescents to support their social, emotional, and psychological development.
