Abstract

Abstract. Generation Z shows a high prevalence of psychological distress, yet actual utilization of professional mental health services remains low, a gap known as the treatment gap. Attitude Towards Seeking Professional Psychological Help (ATSPPH) is considered a proximal cognitive determinant of actual help-seeking behavior. This article reviews the relevance of mental health literacy (MHL) as a predictor of ATSPPH, and the role of perceived social support (PSS) as a factor that may strengthen or weaken this relationship, particularly among Generation Z who use ChatGPT as a form of non-professional psychological support. Using a literature review approach, this article discusses MHL, ATSPPH, and PSS through the lens of the Stress-Buffering Hypothesis (Cohen and Wills, 1985), alongside recent findings on the use of generative AI for emotional disclosure. The review indicates that although MHL is generally associated with more positive help-seeking attitudes, this relationship is not always consistent, suggesting that PSS may condition its strength, either as a buffer that strengthens the effect of MHL or as a substitute that reduces the perceived need for professional help. This review concludes that empirical research testing the interaction between MHL, PSS, and ATSPPH among Generation Z ChatGPT users remains scarce, particularly in the Indonesian context.
