Abstract

Abstract. Psychological Well-Being among Instagram-using college students is at risk of decline due to their tendency to compare their physical appearance with idealized visual content on Instagram (Social Comparison), which may give rise to Body Dissatisfaction. PWB refers to individuals’ ability to accept themselves, build positive relations with others, master their environment, and develop their potential. This study aimed to examine the role of Body Dissatisfaction as a mediator in the relationship between Social Comparison and Psychological Well-Being among Instagram-using college students in Bandung City. A quantitative approach with a mediation-analysis design was applied. Participants were 385 active students aged 18–25 years, obtained through convenience sampling. Social Comparison was measured with the Iowa-Netherlands Comparison Orientation Measure (INCOM), Body Dissatisfaction with the Multidimensional Body-Self Relations Questionnaire-Appearance Scales (MBSRQ-AS), and Psychological Well-Being with Ryff’s Psychological Well-Being Scale. Data were analyzed using Partial Least Square-Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) through SmartPLS with a bootstrapping procedure. Results showed a significant indirect effect (β = -0.294; T-statistic = 4.701; p = 0.000; 95% CI [-0.418; -0.178]), indicating that Body Dissatisfaction partially mediates the relationship between Social Comparison and Psychological Well-Being. These findings show that appearance-based Social Comparison on Instagram contributes to body dissatisfaction, which in turn is associated with lower Psychological Well-Being.
