Abstract. Need to belong is one of the most fundamental psychological needs driving individuals to form and maintain positive, stable, and meaningful interpersonal relationships. This article examines need to belong as a fundamental psychological need in emerging adulthood and explains its relevance to social media use based on previous research. Using a literature review method, relevant scientific articles and theoretical books published mainly within the past ten years were descriptively analyzed to synthesize findings on the concept, aspects, factors, and impacts of need to belong. The results show that need to belong comprises the drive to affiliate with others and the need for social acceptance, shaped by a sense of identity, security, and orderliness, and producing broad effects on individuals' cognitive, emotional, and behavioral functioning. This need becomes increasingly salient during emerging adulthood alongside developmental tasks such as identity formation, autonomy, and intimacy, and its fulfillment is now largely facilitated through social media features such as likes, comments, and other forms of feedback. In conclusion, need to belong not only explains the dynamics of direct interpersonal relationships but also serves as a relevant theoretical framework for understanding broader psychological and social phenomena, including social media use among emerging adults.
