Abstract. Fear of marriage refers to persistent fear, anxiety, doubt, or discomfort when individuals consider marriage as a long-term commitment. Experiences in the family of origin, particularly how interparental conflict is remembered and interpreted, may shape expectations regarding marital stability. This study examined the effect of perceived interparental conflict on fear of marriage among early adult women in Bandung. A quantitative, non-experimental cross-sectional design was used. Participants were 161 unmarried women aged 21-29 years who lived in Bandung, had witnessed interparental conflict, and were recruited through convenience sampling with screening questions. Data were collected using the 8-item Perceptions of Interparental Conflict-Short Form and the 20-item Gamophobia Scale. The Indonesian adaptations showed good internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha = .872 and .940, respectively). Simple linear regression indicated that perceived interparental conflict had a positive and significant effect on fear of marriage (B = 1.143, t = 13.657, p < .001). The model explained 54.0% of the variance in fear of marriage (R² = .540). Thus, stronger perceived exposure to frequent, angry, and dysfunctional interparental conflict was associated with higher fear of marriage. These findings underline the relevance of family-of-origin experiences when understanding concerns about long-term marital commitment.
Model menjelaskan 54,0% variasi fear of marriage (R² = 0,540).
