Abstract

Abstract. Self-compassion is an attitude of compassion toward oneself when facing difficulties or stress at work, while work engagement is a positive psychological state characterized by enthusiasm, dedication, and full involvement in one’s work. Nurses in the inpatient division face simultaneous physical, administrative, and emotional work demands, which have the potential to reduce their psychological energy and work engagement. This study aims to determine the effect of self-compassion on work engagement among nurses in the inpatient division at RSI Assyifa in Sukabumi. The study used a quantitative approach with a correlational design. The study sample consisted of 84 nurses in the inpatient division, selected using a population-based approach. Data were collected from primary sources via questionnaires using the Self-compassion Scale (SCS) and the Utrecht Work engagement Scale-17 (UWES-17), and analyzed using simple linear regression. The results showed a significant positive relationship between self-compassion and work engagement (p = 0.000 < 0.05), with a correlation coefficient (R) of 0.612 and a coefficient of determination (R²) of 37.4%. These findings indicate that nurses with higher levels of self-compassion tend to cope with job demands more adaptively, thereby maintaining their energy, dedication, and engagement at work. Thus, self-compassion is one of the factors that plays a role in enhancing work engagement among inpatient division nurses, although there are other factors that also influence it.
