Perbandingan Motivasi dan Online Self-Disclosure pada Pengguna Media Sosial WhatsApp dan Instagram di Kota Bandung

Abstract

Abstract. The development of communication in social media has had a significant impact on adolescents, and encourages adolescents to conduct online self-disclosure on social media.  Adolescent online self-disclosure behavior can vary according to the satisfaction obtained from the characteristics of social media, and is related to different factors and processes. The purpose of this study was to determine the differences in motivation and level of online self-disclosure between WhatsApp and Instagram users among adolescents in Bandung City. This research design uses a comparative design with a quantitative approach. The subjects of this study were WhatsApp and Instagram users aged 13-18 years who live in Bandung City. The motivation measuring instrument uses a measuring instrument from Masciantonio et al. which has been translated into Indonesian by the researcher. While the online self-disclosure measuring instrument is measured using the Revised Self-Disclosure Scale from Joseph A. DeVito, and has been translated into Indonesian by Ramadhan et al. The data analysis method uses student t test. The significance results show that there is no difference in motivation and level of online self-disclosure between Whatsapp and Instagram user groups.

Abstrak. Perkembangan komunikasi dalam media sosial telah memberikan dampak signifikan pada remaja, dan mendorong remaja untuk melakukan online self-disclosure pada media sosial.  Perilaku online self-disclosure remaja dapat bervariasi sesuai dengan kepuasan yang didapatkan dari karakteristik media sosial, serta berhubungan dengan faktor dan proses yang berbeda. Tujuan dari penelitian ini untuk mengetahui perbedaan motivasi dan tingkat online self-disclosure antara pengguna WhatsApp dan Instagram pada remaja di Kota Bandung. Penelitian ini menggunakan desain komparatif. Subjek penelitian adalah pengguna WhatsApp dan Instagram berusia 13-18 tahun yang berdomisili di Kota Bandung. Alat ukur motivasi menggunakan alat ukur dari Masciantonio et al. yang telah diterjemahkan ke dalam Bahasa Indonesia oleh peneliti. Sedangkan alat ukur online self-disclosure diukur dengan menggunakan Revised Self-Disclosure Scale dari Joseph A. DeVito, dan telah diterjemahkan ke dalam Bahasa Indonesia oleh Ramadhan et al. Metode analisis data menggunakan uji t student. Hasil signifikansi menunjukkan bahwa motivasi dan tingkat online self-disclosure antara kelompok pengguna Whatsapp dan Instagram tidak terdapat perbedaan.
