Abstract

Abstract. Cyberchondria is an excessive online health information seeking behavioar that increases health anxiety. This study analyzed the relationship between emotion regulation and rumination in individuals with cyberchondria, using quantitative methods with a correlational design. A total of 127 respondents aged 18-30 years were selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected using the Emotion Regulation Questionnaire (ERQfor emotion regulation and the Ruminative Thought Style Questionnaire (RTSQ) for rumination. Analysis with Spearman's rho correlation test showed a significant relationship between emotion regulation and rumination (r = 0.308, p = 0.001). Cognitive reappraisal had a negative relationship with rumination (r = -0.839), while expressive suppression showed a positive relationship (r = 0.782). The dimensions of counterfactual thinking (36.2%) and repetitive thought (29.1%) were the dominant aspects of rumination. Adaptive emotion regulation, especially cognitive reappraisal, can reduce the intensity of rumination, while expressive suppression exacerbates maladaptive thought patterns. These findings emphasize the importance of developing adaptive emotion regulation strategies to reduce the negative impact of cyberchondria.
