Abstract

Abstract. Currently, social interactions are mostly done through social media, so people can interact without being limited by space. However, online interactions can cause dissatisfaction because they do not support physical activity, this dissatisfaction is called loneliness. This interaction is related to social media. Excessive use of social media to the point of addiction can separate people from their environment, which can cause individuals to be lonely. The present study aims to determine how social media addiction affects loneliness in the early adulthood age group. This study used a quantitative causality approach with 349 respondents aged 18-25 years old in West Java. The measuring instruments used in this study were the Bergen Social Media Addiction Scale (BSMAS) and the UCLA Loneliness Scale Revised which have been translated into Indonesian. Data were obtained using a questionnaire distributed through social media. The results of this study showed a sig. value = .000 <0.05, which means that the social media addiction variable has an effect on the loneliness variable with a contribution of 9.6%. Based on the results of the study, there is an effect of social media addiction on loneliness in the early adulthood age group in West Java. The mood modification component is the component that contributes more than other social media addiction components to loneliness. In this study, the sample between men and women was not balanced, and only looked at the type of social media use and the type of social media. It is recommended for further research to consider the composition of the sample used and the type of social media content.
