Abstract

Abstract. This study aims to analyze the effect of curiosity motives on self-esteem in students who use dating apps Tinder in Bandung City, who are in the emerging adulthood phase. This phase is characterized by exploration of identity and possibilities that allow individuals to explore various options before them. These characteristics are often related to the desire of individuals who have high self-esteem to continue to develop and improve themselves. In the context of Tinder use, the curiosity motive refers to an individual's desire to know and try the app without the specific goal of finding a romantic partner or relationship. The study involved 122 college student respondents with an age range of 18-25 years, who used Tinder. Simple linear regression analysis method was used to test the relationship between curiosity motive and self-esteem. The results showed that the curiosity motive had a significant influence on self-esteem, amounting to 10.8%. This finding indicates that the desire to explore and try new things, such as using dating apps Tinder out of curiosity, can contribute to the improvement of self-esteem in individuals in the emerging adulthood phase. The implications of this study can help in understanding individuals' motivations in using dating apps and its impact on their self-esteem development, especially at a crucial life stage such as emerging adulthood.
