Abstract

Abstract. This study aims to describe interpersonal communication between children and their incarcerated mothers at the Class IIA Women’s Detention Center in Bandung. Interpersonal communication plays a crucial role in maintaining emotional bonds, particularly for children aged 7–12 during critical development stages. The research employs a qualitative descriptive approach. Data collection methods include in-depth interviews, non-participant observation, and documentation. Joseph A. DeVito’s Interpersonal Communication Model serves as the theoretical framework. Findings reveal significant barriers in communication, such as limited visiting hours, geographic distance, and emotional challenges in children. Although the detention center provides alternatives like video calls and a daycare program, these are underutilized due to poor location and inadequate facilities. Direct visitation remains the primary communication channel. The limitations impact parenting patterns, with caregiving responsibilities often shifting to extended family. The study highlights the need for improved communication facilities and more child-friendly policies to sustain emotional ties between incarcerated mothers and their children.
