Abstract

Acne is a skin disease in which there is a buildup of oil that causes clogged facial skin pores, triggering bacterial activity and inflammation. Antibacterial is a substance that can inhibit the growth of bacteria that can kill acne bacteria. Lavender oil is known to contain active compounds that have antibacterial activity. The purpose of this study was to determine the characteristics of lavender oil as an alternative pharmaceutical ingredient. Oil characterization was carried out by organoleptic testing and content analysis using the Gas Chromatography Mass Spectroscopy (GC-MS) method. The results showed that lavender oil has a liquid form, white to yellow in color, with a characteristic aromatic odor of lavender oil and contains alpha pinene (0.44%), camphene (0.30%), beta pinene (0.41%), beta mycene (1.11%), acetic acid (0.74%), limonene (1.50%), cineole (4.72), linalool (36.55%), camphor (3.16%), terpinine- 4-ol (2.07%), linalyl acetate (32.54), geranyl acetate (1.79%), nerly acetate (1.14%), and caryophyllene (7.55%), with high content of linalool and linalyl acetate, lavender oil can be an alternative active ingredient in pharmaceutical preparations which are known to have antibacterial activity.
