Abstract

Abstract. Oral candidiasis is a fungal infection caused by Candida albicans. Clove oil (Syzygium aromaticum (L.) Merr. & L.M. Perry) possesses antifungal activity with the potential for development as a pharmaceutical active ingredient. This study aimed to characterize the physical properties and identify the compounds present in clove oil (Syzygium aromaticum (L.) Merr. & L.M. Perry) using Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS). Physical characterization revealed that the clove oil was a yellow liquid with a characteristic clove odor and a specific gravity of 1.0419 ± 0.0002 g/mL. Compound identification via GC-MS showed that the clove oil contained several components: eugenol (16.63%), β-caryophyllene (2.15%), bornyl chloride (1.24%), benzene, (1-pentylhexyl)- (3.09%), and benzene, (1-ethylphenyl)- (5.89%). Based on these results, clove oil contains eugenol as the primary active compound responsible for its antifungal activity.

Abstrak. Kandidiasis oral merupakan infeksi jamur yang disebabkan oleh Candida albicans. Minyak cengkeh (Syzygium aromaticum (L.) Merr. & L.M. Perry) memiliki aktivitas antijamur yang berpotensi untuk dikembangkan sebagai bahan aktif farmasi. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk melakukan karakterisasi fisik dan identifiasi senyawa yang terkandung pada minyak cengkeh (Syzygium aromaticum (L.) Merry. & L.M.Perry) menggunakan Gas Chromatography Mass Spectroscopy (GC-MS). Hasil karakterisasi fisik menunjukan bahwa minyak cengkeh berupa cairan berwarna kuning, bau khas cengkeh dan bobot jenis sebesar 1,0419 ± 0,0002 g/mL. Hasil identifikasi senyawa menggunakan Gas Chromatography Mass Spectroscopy (GC-MS) menunjukan bahwa minyak cengkeh mengandung beberapa komponen, yaitu eugenol sebesar 16,63%, β-caryophyllene sebesar 2,15%, bornyl  chloride sebesar 1,24%, benzene, (1-pentylhexyl)-) sebesar 3,09%, benzene, (1-ethylphenyl-) sebesar 5,89%. Berdasarkan hasil tersebut, minyak cengkeh mengandung eugenol sebagai senyawa aktif utama yang memiliki aktivitas antijamur.
