Abstract

Abstract. Ultraviolet (UV) radiation is one of the main environmental factors causing lip damage, including dryness, chapping, premature aging, and inflammation. Therefore, the development of lip balm containing natural photoprotective agents has become an important strategy to maintain lip health. This study aimed to review the potential of mango leaf (Mangifera indica L.) extract and cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) as photoprotective agents in lip balm formulations. This study employed a literature review method by analyzing scientific articles published between 2020 and 2025 from databases including Google Scholar, PubMed, ScienceDirect, SpringerLink, and MDPI. The reviewed literature indicates that mango leaf extract contains mangiferin, flavonoids, phenolic compounds, and tannins, which exhibit strong antioxidant activity and can reduce oxidative stress induced by UV radiation. Meanwhile, CNC improves the physical characteristics of lip balm formulations by enhancing stability, film-forming ability, and moisture retention while supporting photoprotection through light-scattering mechanisms. The combination of mango leaf extract and CNC demonstrates promising potential to produce lip balm formulations with improved photoprotective performance, good physical stability, and enhanced safety. Further experimental studies are required to determine the optimum formulation and evaluate its effectiveness through in vitro and in vivo testing.
