Abstract

Abstract. Medical students often face a heavy academic workload that can trigger stress, leading to changes in eating behavior, such as emotional eating, as a coping mechanism. This behavior may ultimately result in weight gain. This study aims to analyze the relationship between emotional eating and body fat percentage among medical students at the Faculty of Medicine, Islamic University of Bandung, during the 2023/2024 academic year. This research utilized an observational analytic design with a cross-sectional approach and statistical analysis using the Kruskal-Wallis test. A total of 192 students were selected as samples through purposive sampling. The instruments used included the Emotional Eater Questionnaire (EEQ) to assess emotional eating, followed by measuring body fat percentage using a Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis (BIA) device. The results showed that 13,0% of students were categorized as non-emotional eaters, 28,1% as low emotional eaters, 50,5% as emotional eaters, and 8,3% as very emotional eaters. Additionally, 4,2% of students had a low body fat percentage, 41,1% had a normal body fat percentage, and 54,7% had a high to very high body fat percentage. The analysis of the relationship between emotional eating and body fat percentage revealed a significant correlation (p=0,025) between levels of emotional eating and body fat percentage among medical students. In conclusion, the study indicates that emotional eating contributes to an increase in body fat percentage among medical students. These findings underscore the importance of developing intervention programs to help students effectively manage their eating behaviors.
