Abstract

Abstract. The depositional environment of the coal is a layer of coal that undergoes sedimentation. Based on this, research on the depositional environment can help reconstruct the coal formation process. Research has been conducted on East Kalimantan Coal to determine the depositional environment based on coal characteristics. The research stages were carried out by making samples in the form of polished incisions of coal, and the next stage was to analyze using tools in the form of microscopes, also known as Petrographic Analysis, as supporting data as well as ultimate and proximate testing on coal. Coal contains materials that are grouped into sub-materials and have the potential for rare earth metal content in the form of corpohuminite. Under microscopic reflection light, there is a metallic sheen in the form of pyrite, a radioactive mineral that has the potential to be found with rare earth metal elements. The presence of clay minerals also has the potential to have rare earth metal content in coal owing to the transportation and weathering of soil that plants can absorb through roots, resulting in the production of coal for millions of years of geological time.

Abstrak. Lingkungan pengendapan batubara merupakan suatu lapisan pembentukan batubara yang mengalami proses sedimentas. Berdasarkan hal tersebut maka penelitian tentang lingkungan pengendapan dapat merekonstruksi bagaimana proses terbentuknya batubara. Penelitian dilakukan pada Batubara Kalimantan Timur untuk dapat menentukan lingkungan pengendapapan berdasarkan karakteristik batubara. Tahapan penelitian dilakukan dengan membuat sampel berupa sayatan poles dari batubara, serta tahapan berikutnya adalah melakukan analisa menggunakan alat bantu berupa mikroskop atau yang dikenal dengan Analisa Petrografi sebagai data penunjang juga dilakukan pengujian ultimat dan proksimat pada batubara. Dari penelitian yang telah dilakukan, Batubara memiliki maseral yang dikelompokkan ke dalam sub maseral dan yang memiliki potensi kandungan logam tanah jarang berupa Corpohuminite. Dalam Cahaya pantulan mikroskop terdapat kilap logam yang berupa pyrite, mineral radioaktif dimana mineral ini memiliki potensi keterdapatan dengan unsur logam tanah jarang, keterdapatan mineral clay juga berpotensi memiliki kandungan logam tanah jarang pada Batubara karena proses transportasi serta pelapukan dari tanah yang mampu terserap tumbuhan melalui akar, dan tumbuhan tersebut mati menjadikan Batubara selama jutaan tahun waktu geologi.
