Abstract

Roleplay practices on Telegram have emerged as a form of digital communication enabling users to construct, negotiate, and sustain virtual identities within online communities; however research specifically examining this social construction process in within roleplay communities on instant messaging platforms remains scarce. This study analyze how roleplayers construct virtual identities, generates collective norms through community interaction, and interpret their experiences.Using a qualitative netnographic approach, the research was conducted within the roleplay base XH community on Telegram. Data were collected through participant observation, in-depth interviews, digital archives, and field notes from three purposively informants. Findings indicate that virtual identity is constructed through character selection, account attributes, and consistent communication style as a process of externalization. Recurrent interaction gives rise to norms such as the separation the roleplay world from real life, character consistency, and the practices of base and menfess, legitimize virtual identity as a collective social reality. At the internalization stage, roleplayers interpret virtual identity as a medium for social bonding, self-expression, and creativity. This study affirm the relevance of Berger and Luckmann's social construction theory in understanding identity dynamics in digital spaces, while opening avenues for further research into the psychosocial impact of roleplay communities on instant messaging platforms.
